Introduction

Introduction

When the BBC needed a small bookshelf speaker to use in Outside Broadcasts in the early 1970s, it turned to Dudley Harwood and its in-house R&D team to design and produce something small, lightweight and with a predictable frequency response. Fast forward 50 years, and the Harbeth P3ESR is the natural modern successor, improving everything about the original design except for the shoe-box dimensions. For years, people have tried to pair these diminutive speakers with a subwoofer unit to extend the frequency envelope. Until now, the results have been mixed, but the landscape is about to change. Step forward to the first product of Harbeth’s new journey of DSP (Digital Signal Processing). Harbeth has produced a revolutionary accessory with more than a passing resemblance to one of London’s top 10 visitor attractions. Paired with their P3ESR (or any other LS3/5A derivative), Managing Director Alan Shaw and his impressive team have taken the historical inspiration of a world-famous Corinthian Column in the heart of London and started their own revolution.

Welcome to Nelson.

Unboxing

The boxes are impressively large, and the contents are perfectly packed to prevent transit damage. The wire staples are quite vicious, so use plyers to remove them before extracting the contents to prevent scratches or tearing to the fabric of the column.

The column once extracted from the box. Impressively heavy and beautifully finished. The column is finished to match the speaker cloth.

Setting up

Fit the Spikes by laying the column on its side. Ensure the column is level. Add the silicone pad dots to the speakers or to the column top plate.

To connect the Nelsons to the host speaker, place the connecting wires from the top plate to the host speaker terminals (as shown above).

The single-user control is on the back, to adjust the sub level. The power input is adjacent.

Conclusion

Not just a beautiful column speaker stand for the P3ESR, but an active speaker stand crafted with Harbeth’s attention to form and detail, producing the most sonically integrated soundfield. The legendary detailed imaging of the P3ESR in width and depth is now extended downwards, beyond an octave. The Harbeth smoothness that makes for continued fatigue-free listening is further enhanced with the extra richness the sub has brought to the mix. The crossover between sub and host is inaudible, as the DSP has been factory-tuned to make this the best-in-class performer. If you own a pair of Harbeth P3ESR, you owe it to your ears to match them with this ultimate accessory. Nelson would give his right arm for one.
